Denim Day

Lt. Gen. Jay Silveria '85, USAFA's superintendent, delivered his State of USAFA Address on April 5. 2019, in the Polaris Hall Forum.

In his speech, General Silveria described his recent testimony before Congress on Sexual Harassment and Violence at the Academy, as well as his participation at a Sexual Assault and Harassment Summit at the Naval Academy alongside SecAF and CSAF.

He concluded by stating: "The bottom line is that we have to do better.

USAFA will remain a place of dignity and respect, and I'll accept nothing less than that from the new leaders who arrive here soon, who will have a great impact in the shaping of our direction and atmosphere here at the Academy."

In solidarity with other DoD entities and in support of Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Month, on April 24, USAFA will be participating in a national event called Denim Day to make a visual statement that we stand up against victim blaming and sexual violence.

Denim Day originated in 1992, when the Italian Supreme Court overturned a rape conviction based on what the victim was wearing at the time of her assault. The justices ruled that because the victim was wearing tight jeans, she must have helped the person who raped her remove her jeans, thereby implying consent. The following day, the women in the Italian Parliament came to work wearing jeans to protest the decision and show solidarity with the victim.

Denim Day is now recognized as a national and international awareness event with more than six million participants around the world. Please join USAFA on April 24 and wear denim to show your support.
