President & Chief Executive Officer (CEO)
Association of Graduates (AOG) of the United States Air Force Academy (USAFA)
Reports to and partners with the AOG Board of Directors (BOD) according to the AOG:
Vision: The AOG aspires to be the primary organization of USAFA graduates and friends dedicated to supporting the USAFA mission of building leaders of character for the USAF and the nation, and aspires to provide service and support for graduates and cadets.
Mission: To pursue our Vision and to serve and support the United States of America, the USAF, the USAFA, and the graduate community by:
- Working in partnership with the USAFA to produce and foster graduates with an enduring commitment to integrity, excellence, and service to country.
- Providing leadership, communication and support to all the USAFA's graduates and promoting camaraderie among them.
- Promoting the USAFA's heritage, common traditions, and the accomplishments of our graduates.
Core Purpose from the AOG Bylaws: To work in support of the USAF, the USAFA and the graduates to raise private funds to support and develop USAFA, cadet and graduate programs that would otherwise not be funded.
Requirements from the AOG Bylaws: The President/CEO is a salaried, full-time employee of the AOG hired by the Board who serves as Chief Executive Officer and Colorado Registered Agent. The President/CEO shall be a non-active duty graduate member. The President/CEO manages the day-to-day affairs of the AOG, supervises the staff, and advises the Board, as required.
Duties as Enumerated in the AOG Bylaws: The President/CEO shall be responsible to the Board and shall:
- Manage the affairs of the AOG.
- Conduct the correspondence and maintain all necessary records of the AOG.
- Normally attend all meetings of the Board and general membership meetings.
- Limit AOG expenditures to the budget approved by the Board.
- Supervise all AOG employees.
- Execute the orders and duties prescribed by the Board or the Chair.
- Submit an annual report of the financial affairs of the AOG to the Board not later than ninety (90) days after the end of the AOG fiscal year, to include a summary audit of the accounts of the AOG.
- Collect all fees, dues, and other funds and deposit or invest these funds as directed by the Board in accordance with AOG current financial management procedures. The President/CEO shall have custody of all funds of the AOG and shall make disbursement only as authorized by the Board.
- Keep the accounts of the AOG and report thereon at meetings of the Board. The accounts shall be audited each year by an independent firm supervised by the Audit Committee.
- Establish, maintain and specify the content of an operating manual, subject to approval by a majority of the Directors, which amplifies the policy and procedures established by these Bylaws.
- Prepare, maintain and/or file all records and reports required by state or federal law.
Relationships: In maintaining and constantly improving effective relationships with military, public and private organizations, enhances the role and status of the AOG according to its vision, mission, objectives, policies and procedures. Maintains and improves a positive working relationship and acts as the liaison to the:
- Senior leadership of the USAF and the USAFA.
- USAFA Board of Visitors.
- USAFA Foundations, including the Falcon Foundation, Friends of the Library and others.
- Chairman, officers and directors of the AOG BOD.
- Chairman and members of the AOG committees and task forces.
- Legal Counsel, auditors, and other consultants.
- The Cadet Wing
- Appointed and elected leadership of other military universities and organizations.
- Appointed and elected leadership of the appropriate cities, counties, states and the nation.
- Appointed and elected leadership of other organizations, both local and national.
Minimum Requirements:
- Per the Bylaws, a USAFA graduate.
- Highest level of personal integrity and ethics.
- Ability to maintain strict confidentiality when appropriate.
- Clear understanding of the demands of management and leadership and their differences.
- Supervisory experience in directing business and office operations, including budget, operations, and personnel hiring, salary and benefits, supervision, performance reports, and complying with state and federal labor laws.
- Commitment and support to the AOG and USAFA missions, members and cadets, including strong respect for USAF, USAFA, and AOG leadership, members and staff.
- Understanding of the USAFA operation and ability to work within it.
- Personal commitment to and experience with exemplary customer service.
- Strong organizational skills and detail and accuracy oriented work ethic.
- Excellent writing skills in correspondence, reports and proposals.
- Superior oral presentation skills, including substantial experience in public presentations.
- Ability to take BOD mandates and develop viable work plans, including short and long term
strategies.
- Ability to prioritize assignments to complete them in a timely and accurate manner, working under pressure of short deadlines and frequent interruptions.
- Skills in interacting with diverse and controversial issue and people in a professional and amiable manner to develop solutions to emerging problems.
- Familiarity with Higher Education issues, including communications, fund raising and alumni relations.
- Ability to conduct meetings with a high degree of tact and diplomacy.
- Ability to travel widely and work non-normal hours as needed in the best interest of the AOG.
Preferred Experience and Attributes:
- Non-profit organization experience, including working with a volunteer board while speaking up.
- Fundraising experience, to include major capital campaigns.
- Institutional investment management experience.
- Skill in researching, compiling and analyzing information about problems, situations, practices, and procedures to identify relevant concerns, patterns, or tendencies and formulate logical and objective conclusions.
- Experience in budget preparation, effective management within a budget, and identifying effective shared resources.
- Knowledge of and experience with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles.
- Experience in working with business contractors and constructing and supervising work performance.
- Ability to construct a wide range of reports for the BOD and other organizations.
- Ability to direct the design of strategies to cultivate and solicit prospective members and a growing membership base.
- Ability to track and interpret legislative and military initiatives that impact the AOG and its membership, as well as the USAFA and its cadets, informing and mobilizing constituents in appropriate responses that reflect the best interests of the AOG and its members.
- MBA or related graduate degree a strong plus.
